Government Commits to UNESCO Fort and Castle Renovation Fund in 2027 Budget
The government has committed to allocating funds in the 2027 budget specifically for the renovation and preservation of Ghana's historic forts and castles, in a bid to prevent their de-listing by UNESCO.
Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie has warned that the deteriorating condition of these heritage sites poses a serious threat to the country's tourism sector. She noted that failure to address the situation could jeopardise donor funding for tourism activities across Ghana.
Ghana's forts and castles, particularly those along the coast, are significant historical landmarks that serve as major tourist attractions and sources of revenue. The structures are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, a status that requires ongoing maintenance and preservation standards.
The minister's statement underscores the urgency of restoration efforts, as de-listing would damage Ghana's international cultural standing and economic interests tied to heritage tourism.
