Bel-Aqua Foundation pledges GH¢120,000 to train SHS counsellors on drug abuse prevention
The Bel-Aqua Care Foundation has committed GH¢120,000 to support the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in training approximately 800 counsellors working in Senior High Schools nationwide. The donation, announced during World Drug Day observances, aims to strengthen Ghana's response to drug abuse among young people by equipping educators with expertise in prevention, awareness and counselling.
According to Chris Addo Sarkodie, Head of Marketing at Bel-Aqua, the contribution reflects the company's four-year commitment to mental health and youth welfare through its corporate social responsibility arm. "We believe in giving back to society and empowering the youth," he said, noting the foundation targets at least 50 SHSs across all 16 regions with the training programme.
Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, NACOC's Director-General, welcomed the partnership, emphasising that education and counselling are critical to helping young people understand the dangers and consequences of substance abuse. He also warned drug traffickers that the Commission would continue enforcement without compromise, stating: "Those engaged in the sale of these illicit drugs should know that if they are caught, they will be arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law."
The initiative is expected to improve early intervention and support services in schools, contributing to national efforts to reduce drug-related harm among Ghana's student population.
