Seychelles hosts major African tourism summit as region pursues growth strategy
Continental gathering to reshape African tourism policy
The Republic of Seychelles will host the 69th UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) meeting from 2 to 4 July 2026, bringing together tourism ministers, aviation policymakers, and international delegates to establish a unified framework for regional development. The summit coincides with Seychelles' Golden Jubilee independence celebrations and marks the first CAF meeting under the leadership of UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais, the first woman to head the specialized agency in its fifty-year history.
The gathering will focus on three core pillars: sustainable growth, infrastructure connectivity, and human capital development. For Seychelles—where tourism accounts for over 25% of GDP—the summit provides an opportunity to demonstrate how a value-driven hospitality model can strengthen economies against external shocks whilst maximising visitor spending.
Bridging Africa's tourism skills gap
A central agenda item is re-engineering African tourism education and training standards. Member states will deliberate on capacity-building programmes, vocational training frameworks, and digital infrastructure integration. African policymakers recognise that long-term competitiveness depends increasingly on specialised talent and service innovation rather than physical investment alone, requiring local workers and suppliers to capture more value from international visitor spending.
Improving travel connectivity within Africa
The summit will address intra-African aviation connectivity and border friction. Seychelles has implemented advanced digital entry systems for delegates, reflecting the modernisation agenda under the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) initiative. Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with organisers to offer exclusive discounts to sub-Saharan delegates, demonstrating how regional carriers and convention bodies can collaborate to reduce travel costs within the continent.
Delegates will participate in cultural and conservation experiences, showcasing Seychelles' approach to commercialising heritage and environmental assets whilst maintaining their integrity.
