GJA demands urgent probe into military assault on Adom journalist in Nkwanta South

The Ghana Journalists Association has intensified pressure on security authorities to investigate an alleged assault on one of its members, highlighting renewed concerns about press freedom and journalist safety during security operations in Ghana.

Obrempongba Kwame Owusu, the Oti Regional Correspondent for Adom Brands, was reportedly attacked on Saturday, 11 July by suspected military personnel in Nkwanta South. The incident occurred whilst the journalist was covering developments following the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive election in the area, and took place during enforcement of a curfew in the district.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, 3 September, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwomfour called on the Chief of Defence Staff to investigate the matter expeditiously and ensure that anyone found responsible faces appropriate sanctions. The Association emphasised that journalists must be able to perform their professional duties without fear or physical intimidation, especially when reporting on matters of significant public interest.

Evidence in hand, but investigation first

The GJA disclosed that it possesses photographic evidence that could help identify those allegedly involved in the attack. However, the Association has strategically decided not to release the images immediately, choosing instead to allow the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police Service to complete their investigations first. Mr Dwomfour indicated that the GJA stands ready to share this evidence with appropriate authorities and the media once investigations are underway, to support the process without compromising it.

This measured approach reflects the Association's effort to work constructively with security agencies whilst maintaining pressure for accountability. The decision to hold back evidence temporarily suggests confidence that authorities will act, but also signals the GJA's determination to ensure thoroughness over speed.

Incidents involving alleged assaults on journalists raise serious questions about press freedom and the rule of law in Ghana. The country has generally maintained a reputation for relatively strong media freedom compared to other African nations, but this case underscores ongoing tensions between security operations and journalistic access.
