Ghana's Paralympic Committee begins LA28 preparation push with focus on athlete accessibility

Ghana's National Paralympic Committee has launched formal preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games, with committee leadership attending preparatory briefings in August to map out critical operational details that will affect Ghanaian athletes and officials attending the event.

The three-day LA28 National Paralympic Committee Open Days, held 25–27 August in Los Angeles, brought together NPC Ghana officials including president Samson Deen and Foster Kwarteng to examine every logistical element of hosting Paralympic delegations. The Los Angeles Paralympics will run from 15–27 August 2028, marking the first time the city has hosted the summer Paralympic Games.

Planning beyond the track: A holistic athlete journey

NPC Ghana's delegation focused on issues that extend well beyond athlete qualification and competition readiness. Committee officials examined entry documentation requirements, accommodation standards, airport accessibility, transport arrangements, ticketing systems, ceremony logistics and media coordination protocols.

President Deen stressed that African nations must view Paralympic preparation as protecting an athlete's complete journey. "Our responsibility is to protect the athlete's full journey," he said. "Qualification and training must be matched by early planning for entry, accessibility, accommodation, transport, information and family support." This comprehensive approach recognises that barriers to success can emerge at any stage—from visa processing to hotel room specifications to airport transfers—not just at competition venues.

The Los Angeles meetings helped NPC Ghana consolidate outstanding questions into a single readiness plan whilst identifying areas requiring further written clarification from LA28 organisers.

Accessibility as a complete chain, not isolated fixes

Accessibility emerged as a central concern during the Open Days sessions. Presenters outlined challenges specific to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), including fixed curbside arrangements that may require multiple loading zones to accommodate accessible arrivals. NPC Ghana flagged the need for further detail on arrival assistance, accessible transfers, mobility equipment handling and delegation movement logistics.

Deen emphasised that accessibility cannot be treated as a single checkpoint. "A world-class venue cannot compensate for an inaccessible transfer, an incorrect room specification or information that does not reach the person who needs it," he said. Sessions covered mobility requirements at accommodation facilities, visual and auditory accessibility needs, accessible ticketing with companion access, and transport to ceremonies and competition venues.

The committee plans to seek additional clarification on several fronts before finalising its delegation plans, ensuring that Ghana's Paralympic athletes with varying accessibility needs can move seamlessly throughout their Games experience.

Why it matters for Ghana

Ghana's Paralympic programme has grown in visibility and participation over recent Games cycles. By engaging early in LA28 logistics, NPC Ghana is positioning the nation to field delegations with confidence, knowing that accessibility gaps have been identified and addressed before athletes board flights.

The preparatory work also carries broader implications: clear communication about US visa requirements, accreditation systems and entry documentation helps prevent last-minute crises that could exclude athletes or officials. NPC Ghana has signalled that Games accreditation does not substitute for passports, visas or US travel authorisation—a critical distinction for delegations unfamiliar with American entry procedures.

Additionally, NPC Ghana is exploring a potential Ghana House activation in Los Angeles during the Games, with Baldwin Hills Crenshaw identified as a possible location for African and Caribbean national events. However, the committee emphasised that no location, budget, permits, transport or sponsorship agreements have been confirmed yet.

Outstanding practical questions

NPC Ghana noted that several accommodation allocations, hotel inventories and capacity for additional team officials remain subject to confirmation from LA28 organisers. The committee is also coordinating arrangements for Ghanaian media representatives intending to cover the Games, though accreditation submission does not guarantee approval.

The committee stressed that all stakeholders—athletes, officials and media—must complete both NPC Ghana's internal coordination processes and LA28 accreditation submissions, then independently satisfy all US entry requirements. Final entry to the United States remains subject to US Customs and Border Protection decisions regardless of accreditation status.

NPC Ghana's early engagement signals a shift towards strategic, athlete-centred Games preparation that treats logistics as integral to competitive success, not afterthoughts.
