Ghana revives annual school sports competitions to rebuild football talent pipeline
Government backs grassroots football overhaul
Sports Minister Kofi Adams has announced that Ghana will reinstate annual school sports competitions as a cornerstone of the nation's football development strategy. The move forms part of a broader initiative to rebuild the country's sporting foundations and create a sustainable pipeline of talent for the Black Stars and other national teams.
Speaking on Joy FM's Newsight programme, Mr Adams responded to public calls for reform following Ghana's disappointing World Cup performance. He emphasised that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to strengthening youth structures across all sporting disciplines, with particular focus on football. School sports, historically a crucial pathway for identifying young talent, will be organised every year rather than biennially.
Focus on youth development levels
The Minister outlined a multi-layered approach to talent development, stressing the importance of investing in Under-15, Under-17, and Under-20 teams. He noted that consistent progress at youth levels would eventually translate into improved performances by the senior national team, though he acknowledged this process would require patience and sustained commitment.
Beyond competition structures, the government plans to improve local football standards, ensure transparent player selection processes, and create an environment that encourages players to perform at their highest level. Mr Adams stated the administration remains focused on hunting for talent and improving domestic football standards.
