Europe's deadly heatwave: France reports 2,000+ excess deaths as extreme heat sweeps continent

Record death toll across France and Europe

France has confirmed a stark rise in mortality during the peak of a record-breaking heatwave in June, with deaths climbing by more than 2,000 in the final week of the month. The Public Health France agency reported a 29% increase in deaths between 22 and 28 June compared to the previous week, with French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist highlighting a significant surge in fatalities among people aged over 45. The country experienced its hottest day on average nationwide on 24 June, when temperatures soared to nearly 41°C in Paris.

The human cost of extreme heat has been severe across the continent. Belgium recorded 1,222 excess deaths during the same period—a 39% spike—with nearly half of those victims aged 85 and over. The Netherlands reported approximately 480 excess deaths, mostly among those aged 80 and older, when temperatures approached 40°C in parts of the country. The French health ministry cautioned that its figures represent an underestimate, suggesting the true mortality toll could be substantially higher.

New heatwave warnings as climate crisis accelerates

Europe faces another dangerous spell of extreme heat beginning this weekend, with forecasters warning of temperatures reaching 40°C across southern France and peaks of 36–37°C around Bordeaux, Toulouse and Agen. Météo-France has issued red heat alerts for Friday and Saturday, citing a "very high" risk of forest fires compared to normal summer levels. Portugal's government has declared a state of alert, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C in some areas, while Spain's southwest regions face orange weather alerts.

Climate scientists point to global warming as the driving force behind Europe's escalating heat crisis. Europe is heating twice as fast as the global average, according to the Copernicus climate service, making it the fastest-warming continent. This pattern is intensifying summer heatwaves, straining water supplies and fuelling devastating wildfires. France's Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu reported that nearly 7,000 fires have erupted since the start of summer, burning approximately 8,700 hectares so far.

Beyond the immediate death toll, heatwaves are proving deadly in unexpected ways. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported 72 drowning deaths since 18 June, as people sought refuge in water during dangerous heat. The convergence of extreme temperatures, wildfire risk and health emergencies underscores how climate change is reshaping Europe's summer landscape.
