Creative Industries Urged to Lead National Cleaning Drive After Recent Floods

Ghana's Creative Arts Agency has launched a nationwide call for creative professionals to participate in a major environmental cleanup exercise scheduled for 10-11 July 2026, positioning the creative sector as a catalyst for post-flood recovery and community resilience.

The two-day initiative, themed 'Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods,' aims to restore environmental cleanliness across communities while addressing ongoing challenges from recent flooding. The exercise, coordinated under the Post Flood Mitigation Committee, seeks to mobilise citizens around environmental responsibility and collective nation-building efforts.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Creative Arts Agency Gideon Aryeequaye called on musicians, actors, filmmakers, visual artists, fashion designers, writers, publishers, artisans, dancers, photographers, and content creators to actively participate. The agency emphasised that creative professionals possess unique influence over public behaviour and can drive meaningful change in attitudes towards environmental stewardship and civic responsibility.

The Role of the Creative Community

The Creative Arts Agency highlighted the creative sector's broader responsibility beyond entertainment and cultural preservation. According to the statement, artists and cultural practitioners have considerable power to shape public attitudes and encourage responsible citizenship—a capacity that can be leveraged to address Ghana's environmental challenges.

By participating in the cleanup exercise, the creative community would demonstrate commitment to artistic excellence whilst simultaneously contributing to nation-building and environmental sustainability. This dual focus recognises that societal progress requires engagement across all sectors, including culture and the arts.

The agency called on creative associations, guilds, unions, production houses, and practitioners across all 16 regions to mobilise their members and coordinate with local government, traditional authorities, security agencies, and community organisations during the exercise.

Why It Matters for Ghana

Ghana has faced increasing challenges from flooding in recent years, with poor drainage systems and inadequate waste management contributing to environmental degradation and public health risks. The National General Cleaning Exercise represents a comprehensive response to these issues, seeking to combine immediate cleanup efforts with longer-term environmental awareness.

The initiative's focus on mobilising the creative sector reflects recognition that behaviour change and environmental consciousness require cultural engagement alongside technical solutions. Artists and cultural workers reach broad audiences through their work and possess credibility in communities, making them valuable partners in promoting sustainable practices.

The timing also reflects broader government efforts to address post-flood recovery comprehensively. By positioning the creative industries as active participants rather than passive observers, the initiative acknowledges that environmental resilience depends on collective action from all sectors of society.

The Creative Arts Agency's statement emphasised that clean surroundings, well-maintained drainage systems, and responsible waste disposal are essential for safeguarding lives, property, and public health. These practical considerations underscore why the exercise extends beyond symbolic community engagement to address tangible environmental and sanitation issues affecting Ghanaians daily.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to national development and urged creatives to respond with dedication, patriotism, and volunteerism, recognising that sustainable environmental improvement depends on sustained engagement from communities themselves.
