Bohyen Chief Presses Government for Fire Station, Ambulance Service in Ashanti Communities

The Chief of Bohyen in the Ashanti Region, Nana Antwi Boasiako II, has made a direct appeal to government to address critical gaps in emergency response infrastructure, highlighting the absence of fire stations across a cluster of communities in the area. Speaking during celebrations marking his 25th anniversary on the throne, the Chief underscored the dangers posed by delayed firefighting response times, citing Bantama, Bohyen, Abrepo, Barekese, Mankranso, Adugyama and Offinso as communities left vulnerable without adequate fire cover.

Emergency Services and Infrastructure Gaps

Beyond fire safety, Nana Boasiako II stressed the need for the National Ambulance Service to expand its reach into Bohyen and surrounding areas. Quick access to ambulances in medical emergencies can mean the difference between life and death, particularly in communities at a distance from major health facilities. The Chief's appeal reflects growing concerns in Ashanti Region towns about the strain on emergency services and the risks faced by residents when response times are lengthy.

The Chief also advocated for construction of a dedicated community centre in Bohyen, identifying a specific social problem: the blocking of roads during funerals and other gatherings. This practice, he noted, contributes significantly to traffic congestion in the area and disrupts movement for residents and commuters. A purpose-built facility would allow such events to proceed without impeding vehicular traffic, whilst providing the community with a venue for multiple social and administrative functions.

Development Progress and Recognition

In acknowledging progress made over his tenure, Nana Boasiako II highlighted the contributions of Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama and former Roads and Highways Minister. The Chief credited the MP with facilitating or supporting several key projects that have transformed Bohyen in recent years: a police station, improved inner road networks, a classroom block, an Astroturf football park and a community library. These investments demonstrate the potential for coordinated development when leadership and government support align.

Why It Matters for Ghana

The Chief's appeals reflect a broader pattern across Ghana's regions: rural and semi-urban communities often lack basic emergency infrastructure that residents in larger cities take for granted. Fire stations and ambulance services are critical public safety assets, yet many Ghanaian towns operate without them. When communities are forced to wait significantly longer for emergency response, preventable deaths and property losses increase. Similarly, inadequate social infrastructure forces communities to use public spaces in ways that disrupt traffic and commerce.

Bohyen's case illustrates how development must be holistic: roads and educational facilities matter, but so do emergency services and social infrastructure. For government and development partners, this highlights the need to prioritise fire stations and ambulance coverage in their infrastructure planning for regional towns. The anniversary celebrations, which drew together traditional leaders, government officials, clergy, business leaders and residents, provided an appropriate platform for the Chief to make these needs visible and secure public commitments to address them.

The Chief's 25-year tenure has also seen a refurbished palace inaugurated, symbolising both personal achievement and the importance placed on traditional leadership in community development. With businessman Dr Nana Kwaku Duah pledging ongoing support for the Chief's development agenda, there is at least local momentum behind these infrastructure appeals—though translating them into funded government projects will require sustained advocacy and partnership.
