Ashanti Teen Remanded After Cutlass Attack on Mother and Sister Over Missing Cannabis

The Kuntanase District Court in the Ashanti Region has remanded a 17-year-old boy, Isaac Opoku, into custody after he allegedly used a cutlass to inflict serious wounds on his mother and sister during a confrontation over missing cannabis on the night of 21st June 2026.

According to Chief Inspector Samuel Krah, who is prosecuting the case, the accused — described as a suspected drug addict — returned home to find one of ten parcels of dried cannabis he had left in his room was missing. In a rage, he picked up a cutlass and confronted the two women in the household, demanding the missing parcel. The victims, Madam Grace Yeboah and her daughter Madam Margaret Oduro, handed over the remaining nine parcels, but the accused refused to be pacified and proceeded to attack them both.

Neighbours who heard the commotion rushed to the scene and rescued the victims before alerting a police patrol team. All three — including the accused, who sustained minor injuries — were taken to St. Michael Hospital for treatment. The accused was subsequently discharged and arrested.

The condition of Madam Margaret Oduro deteriorated two days later, on 23rd June, and she was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further medical attention. Her mother, Madam Grace Yeboah, also remains on admission.

During investigations, the accused reportedly admitted to the offence in a cautioned statement and led police officers to the location where the cutlass used in the attack was recovered. He has been charged with causing unlawful harm.

Because police investigations are still ongoing, the court did not take a plea from the accused. He is to be brought before the court again on 8th July 2026.
