Kumasi Drug Sweep: Police Nab Over a Dozen Suspects Including National Service Worker
The Ghana Police Service has carried out a sweeping anti-narcotics operation across several communities in Kumasi, leading to the arrest of more than a dozen suspects and the seizure of significant quantities of illegal substances. The joint operation involved the Inspector-General of Police's Special Operations Team alongside the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
Key Arrests and Seized Substances
Among the notable arrests was Kwame Afriyie, 61, popularly known as "Con Papa" or "American Man", who was picked up at Asawase. Officers recovered a combined total of 81 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis from his residence and provision shop. At Asafo, a suspect identified as Kofi Acheampong, alias "Mokobiley", was found in possession of 311 sachets of suspected dried narcotics, 13 compressed parcels, and 10 brown paper wraps containing black rock-like substances believed to be cocaine, as well as restricted pharmaceutical products.
In a particularly striking development at Krofrom, Michael Owusu Agyeman, a 22-year-old National Service personnel, was arrested after police found 15 bottles of fruit juice allegedly laced with cannabis — raising fresh concerns about the increasingly creative methods used to conceal and distribute narcotics.
Further arrests were made across Atonsu-Bokuro, Krofrom, Kenyase, Asokwa, Buokrom, and Asafo BB. Those apprehended include Adamu Ibrahim, Stanley Boahene, Favour Emmanuel, Abubakar Sadick, Adwoa Serwaa Boamah, Paul Quagraine, Nana Kwasi Amo Peprah, Hamdiyah Ibrahim, Nicholas Adorku, and Natson Yaaba — ranging in age from 23 to 47 years.
Exhibits and Legal Proceedings
Items confiscated during the operation include compressed cannabis parcels, tramadol tablets, ecstasy, amphetamine, suspected cocaine, and various other controlled substances. All exhibits have been secured and sent for forensic analysis. Every suspect has been arraigned before a court and remanded into police custody pending further hearings.
The Ghana Police Service described the operation as part of its sustained campaign against drug trafficking and abuse in the country. The Command called on the public to continue providing credible tip-offs on drug-related activity, and commended officers from both the Special Operations Team and the Ashanti Regional Command for their professionalism in disrupting criminal drug networks.
