Army Launches 'Operation Boafo' to Rescue Flood Victims Across Accra
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have mobilised personnel to assist residents trapped by floodwaters in several parts of Accra, activating a relief mission codenamed Operation Boafo. The intervention comes as heavy rainfall continues to batter the capital, leaving numerous communities submerged and residents in urgent need of assistance.
Lieutenant Colonel Frank Osei Amponsah, Commanding Officer of the 48 Engineer Regiment, confirmed the deployment during an interview on Joy FM's Super Morning Show. He stated that troops have been positioned at key flood-prone locations, including Klagon, Tse Addo, and Dzowulu, to provide rapid response and reduce the threat to human life.
Lt Col Amponsah revealed that soldiers on the ground have already evacuated a number of residents who were stranded in their homes and unable to leave on their own. He emphasised that the operation is actively ongoing and that teams are working in a coordinated manner with other emergency services across the city.
Despite the severity of flooding in some areas, Lt Col Amponsah indicated that no deaths had been recorded as of the time of his interview, though the situation remains under close watch. He urged the public not to take unnecessary risks and to seek help promptly rather than wait for conditions to worsen.
Residents in distress or those who require emergency assistance can reach the Operation Boafo team directly on 0244 312 667. Authorities have appealed to Accra residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant as more rainfall is anticipated.
