Accra Police Kill Armed Robbery Suspect, Seize AK-47 in Agbogbloshie Gunfight

The Accra Regional Police Command has successfully thwarted what officials say was a planned armed robbery operation, resulting in the death of one suspect and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons in the Ablekuma Central Municipality on Thursday, 10 September.

Following a gunfight at the Galoway Police Barrier near Agbogbloshie, officers recovered an AK-47 assault rifle (serial number 79-HF3014) fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of ammunition, plus an additional 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition—a total haul of 186 rounds. Two unregistered motorcycles, a Royal and an Apsonic, were also seized during the operation.

How the Operation Unfolded

Intelligence had reached the Accra Regional Police Command indicating that four armed men on two motorcycles were planning to rob the Shell Filling Station near Agbogbloshie. A rapid response team from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate, bolstered by the Operational Unit, was deployed to intercept the suspects.

The officers encountered the group at the Galoway Police Barrier, prompting an armed exchange. During the confrontation, one suspect was shot and subsequently died at the Police Hospital. The three remaining suspects abandoned their motorcycles and managed to escape the scene. Investigators are currently working to identify and apprehend the fugitives.

The deceased suspect's body has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary pending identification and a full autopsy. The firearm, ammunition and motorcycles have been retained as evidence as investigations continue.
