Winneba–Cape Coast Road Submerged: Hundreds Stranded As Floods Block Major Highway

Hundreds of travellers have been left stranded along one of Ghana's busiest coastal corridors after severe flooding submerged key sections of the Winneba–Cape Coast highway, bringing traffic to a complete halt.

Commuters and motorists on both sides of the affected stretch have been unable to proceed with their journeys, as rising water levels continue to overwhelm the road surface. The disruption has effectively shut down movement along the route, forcing passengers to wait indefinitely for conditions to ease.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned that the situation is unlikely to improve quickly, with rainfall expected to persist until the afternoon of Monday, 29th June. Forecasters have also indicated that additional rainfall is moving in from the Benin–Togo coastal corridor, raising concerns that water levels along the highway could rise further before any relief is felt.

The Winneba–Cape Coast road is a critical link between the Greater Accra and Central regions, serving commercial vehicles, intercity buses, and private motorists on a daily basis. Its closure, even temporarily, has significant knock-on effects for trade and travel across the two regions.

Authorities are yet to announce any official diversion routes or emergency interventions to assist those stranded. Commuters are advised to monitor updates from the Ghana Meteorological Agency and avoid the affected stretch until further notice.
