Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu Confirmed in Nsawam Prison Since June 24

Prison Arrival Confirmed

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, the former chief executive of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), officially began serving her 10-year prison sentence at Nsawam Medium Security Female Prison on Wednesday, 24 June, sources with knowledge of the matter have confirmed. Her arrival at the facility ends weeks of public speculation about her whereabouts following her extradition from the United States.

The former MASLOC boss arrived in Ghana on 9 June after being extradited to serve her sentence. She spent approximately four to five days at the Police Hospital in Accra following her arrival, where she received medical treatment before being certified fit to begin her sentence. The Ghana Prisons Service then transferred her to Nsawam, where she remains in the female section with restricted visiting access.

Background to Conviction

Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted by an Accra High Court in 2024 on multiple charges including causing financial loss to the state and theft. The charges arose from allegations of misappropriation and diversion of state resources during her tenure at the government-funded microfinance institution. She had obtained permission to travel to the United States in 2021 for medical treatment whilst her trial was ongoing, but failed to return to Ghana.

She was tried and convicted in absentia in 2024. Her legal team has filed an appeal challenging the propriety of the trial in absentia and sentencing, with the court set to deliver its ruling on 30 July 2026.
