Ghana Sends 47 Health Workers to Caribbean Under Managed Migration Scheme

The Ghana Health Service has deployed 47 medical professionals to Saint Kitts and Nevis as part of a structured Health Workforce Migration Initiative. The scheme, managed by the Ministry of Health, aims to provide temporary overseas employment while ensuring workers return to strengthen Ghana's healthcare sector.

The health workers will serve on two to three-year contracts in the Caribbean nation, with guaranteed repatriation once their assignments conclude. The arrangement is designed to address labour shortages abroad whilst preventing permanent brain drain from Ghana's health system. Deputy Minister of Health Grace Ayensu-Danquah confirmed that returning professionals will bring enhanced skills and international training experience back to Ghana.

At their departure ceremony at Accra International Airport, the health workers expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity. "This is a major career development opportunity," one professional noted, whilst others pledged to represent Ghana positively throughout their service abroad.

The initiative offers participants attractive remuneration, improved working conditions, and professional development benefits. Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo and Deputy Minister Ayensu-Danquah attended the send-off, underscoring government support for the programme. Officials described the arrangement as mutually beneficial for both Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis, strengthening healthcare delivery in the Caribbean whilst building the expertise of Ghana's medical workforce.
