Otumfuo Tells Pharmacists: Numbers Mean Nothing Without Standards

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a firm call to Ghana's pharmacy profession to never allow the pursuit of growth to come at the expense of quality, warning that the true measure of the sector's success lies in the competence of its practitioners rather than the size of its workforce.

Otumfuo made the remarks on Sunday, 28th June, when he served as Special Guest of Honour at the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana's 90th anniversary celebration, held at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. Pharmacists from across the country gathered to reflect on the profession's journey, acknowledge its progress, and map out a path forward.

The Asantehene was unequivocal in his assessment of pharmacists' place within the national health system. "No health system can function effectively without a strong, well-trained and properly utilised pharmaceutical workforce," he stated, adding that investments in healthcare must deliberately account for the development and deployment of pharmacists at every level of care.

Government Must Act

Otumfuo also directed his message at the government, calling on authorities to make the training, deployment and welfare of pharmacists a central part of broader healthcare strengthening efforts. He stressed that patient-centred care must remain the cornerstone of pharmacy practice in Ghana.

The anniversary milestone offered the Society an opportunity to assess how far pharmacy education and practice have come since the body's founding nine decades ago, whilst identifying areas requiring urgent attention. The Asantehene's address reinforced the expectation that the profession moves forward, in his words, "with clarity, discipline and purpose."
