NPP MP calls for evidence-based discipline as party tensions escalate over Ken protest
Party unity under strain
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is grappling with internal tensions following a heated confrontation at a recent National Executive Committee meeting, where security personnel clashed with protesters chanting "Ken Must Go" outside the Alisa Hotel venue. The incident has reignited debate within the opposition party over how discipline, loyalty and dissent should be managed.
Suame Member of Parliament John Darko has warned party members to exercise restraint, arguing that public criticism of colleagues risks damaging the NPP's ability to present a united front ahead of future elections. Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, he stressed that allegations of wrongdoing must be backed by solid evidence and processed through the party's internal disciplinary mechanisms rather than aired publicly.
Evidence and accountability
Mr Darko emphasised that any member making corruption claims must be prepared to substantiate them before the party's disciplinary committee. Where credible evidence exists, he said, the committee should hold the implicated persons accountable, including through prosecution where warranted. However, in the absence of proof, the party must still make formal decisions in line with its rules.
The MP also cautioned younger party leaders against deepening divisions through public hostility or criticism of senior figures. He urged the party leadership to resolve disputes internally using established structures, warning against a culture of "wishing people away" from the organisation. Mr Darko stressed that long-standing relationships and service to the party should be considered when handling internal matters, and called for reconciliation and inclusivity to maintain organisational strength.
