Kennedy Agyapong's Discipline Case unjustified – Dr Kennedy Defends Former MP

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Dr Arthur Kennedy has challenged the decision to refer Kennedy Agyapong, the ex-Assin Central MP, to the party's National Disciplinary Committee, describing the move as unjustified. Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, Dr Kennedy argued that Mr Agyapong's public comments about the stalled Afari Military Hospital and alleged corruption within the party do not constitute a breach of NPP constitutional rules.

Dr Kennedy stressed that Mr Agyapong merely raised concerns that many Ghanaians and party members have openly expressed about the Akufo-Addo administration's failure to complete the Afari Military Hospital despite eight years in office. He noted that multiple post-election review committees, including the Michael Oquaye Committee and the Oti Boateng Committee, had reached similar conclusions to those voiced by Mr Agyapong. "If what Kennedy Agyapong is saying is factual, then proof itself becomes a defence," Dr Kennedy stated, adding that stating facts should not be treated as an offence.

The NPP's National Executive Committee and National Council recently referred Mr Agyapong to the disciplinary process following petitions over comments deemed damaging to party unity. Mr Agyapong had criticised the government's handling of the Afari hospital project and alleged that Agenda 111 healthcare contracts were compromised by corruption. He also warned he could expose further wrongdoing if attempts were made to silence him.

Dr Kennedy argued that the party leadership should focus on investigating the substance of these allegations rather than disciplining the person raising them. "Those who may have been involved in corrupt activities are the ones who should be answering questions," he said, suggesting that addressing such concerns would strengthen the NPP's credibility. He also expressed concern about the party's handling of internal criticism, stating that modern politics demands different approaches to accountability. The National Disciplinary Committee has two weeks to complete its investigation.
