NPP Demands Full Disclosure Over Government's Purchase of Refurbished Locomotives
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised serious concerns about the current government's decision to acquire two refurbished locomotives, demanding greater transparency over the deal before the public purse is further committed.
Opposition members are calling on the government to disclose key details surrounding the transaction, including the age of the locomotives, the total cost involved, and what maintenance arrangements have been put in place to keep the engines operational over the long term.
The NPP argues that purchasing refurbished — rather than new — rolling stock raises legitimate questions about value for money and the long-term reliability of the equipment for Ghana's railway network. The party insists that Ghanaians deserve full accountability on any expenditure involving public funds.
Railway infrastructure has long been identified as a critical area for Ghana's economic development, particularly for the movement of goods from the country's interior to its ports. Critics have previously highlighted the deteriorating state of the national rail network and questioned whether piecemeal acquisitions can address deeper, structural challenges.
The government is yet to issue a formal response to the NPP's demands. GH Today will continue to follow developments as more details emerge.
