NDC suspends party communicator Daniel Nortey over sexual abuse remarks
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken disciplinary action against party communicator Daniel Nortey, suspending him from all media appearances and public representation of the party effective immediately. The suspension follows inflammatory remarks he made during a live radio discussion about serious allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
Mr. Nortey made the controversial comments while appearing on Amansan Television's morning show 'Anopa Bosuo' in Accra. The NDC's National Communication Bureau released a formal statement on 22 October 2026 expressing grave concern about his commentary, which party leadership determined trivialised allegations of sexual misconduct and fell short of the seriousness such matters demand.
Party's Response and Zero-Tolerance Policy
In its official statement, the NDC emphasised its strict zero-tolerance approach to sexual abuse and exploitation, underscoring the paramount importance of safeguarding children's safety, dignity and welfare. The party condemned any public discourse that diminishes the gravity of abuse allegations or undermines their proper handling.
Although Mr. Nortey tendered an unreserved apology for his remarks, the party's leadership determined that suspension was necessary to reinforce its commitment to responsible public engagement on sensitive issues. The NDC stressed that discussions around sexual misconduct must be conducted with appropriate sensitivity, responsibility, and strict adherence to established due process and legal frameworks.
The party further cautioned that such allegations should never become tools for partisan scoring or be treated as light matters suitable for casual commentary. Instead, the NDC called for all sexual abuse claims to be addressed through proper legal channels with the seriousness they warrant.
Why This Matters for Ghana
This disciplinary action reflects broader concerns within Ghana's political and media landscape about how serious allegations—particularly those involving children and institutional figures—are discussed in public forums. Educational institutions like secondary schools hold positions of trust, and allegations against their leadership strike at the heart of child safety within Ghana's school system.
The suspension signals that Ghana's major political parties face mounting pressure to ensure their representatives maintain professional standards when discussing sensitive issues on radio and television platforms. With Ghana's media playing an increasingly central role in public discourse, how politicians and party communicators frame discussions about abuse and exploitation can significantly shape public perception and the likelihood of proper investigation and justice.
The NDC's response also highlights the tension between free expression and responsible communication—a balance Ghana's political actors continue to navigate. For parents, educators, and child welfare advocates across Ghana, the incident underscores the need for consistent, dignified handling of abuse allegations through appropriate institutional and legal processes rather than through sensationalised media debate.
