MTN to launch 5G services in Ghana after securing $202m spectrum licenses from NCA

MTN Ghana is preparing to become one of the first telecommunications providers to deploy 5G services in the country, following approval from the National Communications Authority (NCA) to operate spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands. The telecom operator has committed to the substantial investment, with the licenses carrying an estimated cost of US$202 million.

The NCA's decision came after MTN applied for spectrum licences across three frequency bands—700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz—intended for 5G and mobile broadband services. The company has been awarded licences in two of these bands and is currently completing administrative and financial obligations necessary to activate them.

In a statement to investors, MTN confirmed that license payment costs have already been factored into the company's financial forecasts, indicating confidence in the investment's strategic importance. The firm has not yet provided a specific date for when 5G services will become available to customers, but indicated the rollout will proceed once formalities are concluded.

Expected benefits for Ghana's digital infrastructure

The 5G deployment represents a significant milestone for Ghana's telecommunications landscape. MTN plans to utilise the new spectrum alongside its existing frequency allocations to expand network capacity and improve service quality nationwide. The company emphasises that 5G will be critical for driving growth in mobile services and for bringing home connectivity solutions to more Ghanaians, particularly in underserved areas.

5G technology promises substantially faster data speeds compared to current 4G networks, enabling improved video streaming, online education, remote healthcare services, and business applications. The rollout is expected to support Ghana's broader digital economy ambitions and help bridge connectivity gaps between urban and rural regions.

Why it matters for Ghana

Ghana's telecommunications sector has been gradually modernising, with 4G networks now widely available in major cities. The introduction of 5G by a major operator like MTN signals confidence in Ghana's market potential and digital future. However, the $202 million investment by MTN raises questions about how this cost will be passed on to consumers through service charges.

The NCA's decision to award these licences represents government effort to promote competition and technological advancement in the sector. Other major operators in Ghana may follow suit in seeking 5G spectrum, potentially accelerating the country's transition to next-generation connectivity. For businesses and digital services, faster and more reliable networks could unlock new opportunities in e-commerce, fintech, and creative industries.

The deployment timeline remains unclear, but MTN's commitment to inform stakeholders of progress suggests the company views this as a priority investment for the coming months.
