MTN Ghana Invests $202m In New 5G Spectrum To Accelerate Broadband Rollout Across Nation

MTN Ghana has taken a major step in its digital infrastructure expansion after the National Communications Authority awarded the telecommunications giant new spectrum licences in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz frequency bands. The dual allocation, representing a combined investment of USD 202 million, marks one of the most significant spectrum acquisitions in Ghana's telecom sector and signals accelerated progress towards nationwide 5G deployment.

The company secured two of three available lots in the 700 MHz band (2 x 20 MHz of spectrum) for USD 100.9 million, whilst claiming all three available lots in the 3 GHz band (150 MHz combined) for USD 101.1 million. Each licence carries a 15-year tenure, providing MTN Ghana with extended operational certainty for long-term infrastructure investments.

Stephen Blewett, MTN Ghana's Chief Executive Officer, described the acquisition as marking "an important milestone in our commitment to building the infrastructure that will transform Ghana's digital landscape." The dual-band approach offers complementary advantages: the 700 MHz spectrum will extend quality connectivity into underserved rural and community areas, whilst the 3 GHz band delivers the high-speed capacity needed for densely populated urban zones where 5G demand is concentrated.

Impact On Ghana's Digital Infrastructure

The spectrum award addresses a critical gap in Ghana's broadband ecosystem. The 700 MHz band's extended coverage range makes it particularly valuable for reaching remote communities that have historically struggled with reliable connectivity. Simultaneously, the 3 GHz allocation enables MTN to deliver the gigabit-speed home internet services increasingly essential for remote work, education and digital commerce—sectors that expanded dramatically during the pandemic.

MTN Ghana plans to deploy the new spectrum alongside its existing holdings to strengthen overall network capacity and enhance service quality. The company has emphasised its intention to advance both 5G mobility services and fixed wireless home broadband expansion, two areas critical to Ghana's digital transformation objectives.

Why This Matters For Ghana

This spectrum award arrives as Ghana positions itself as a regional technology hub and seeks to bridge the digital divide between urban centres and rural areas. The NCA's decision to auction 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz bands reflects a strategic approach to modernising Ghana's telecom infrastructure in alignment with global 5G deployment standards.

For ordinary Ghanaians, these investments translate into tangible improvements: faster mobile data speeds, more reliable rural connectivity, and competitive home broadband alternatives to fixed-line services. Businesses will benefit from enhanced network capacity for digital transactions, cloud services and e-commerce operations. The 15-year licence period also provides certainty that these services will remain available and improved throughout the licence term.

The USD 202 million investment underscores the substantial capital requirements for modern telecom infrastructure. This significant financial commitment demonstrates MTN Ghana's confidence in the Ghanaian market and its willingness to fund backbone improvements that extend beyond immediate profit centres.

MTN Ghana has committed to keeping customers, shareholders and market participants informed as the company progresses with spectrum deployment and 5G service expansion. The rollout timeline will determine how quickly Ghanaians nationwide can access these enhanced connectivity services.
