Major cargo fire destroys truck and GH¢800,000 worth of appliances on Eastern Region highway

A fully loaded commercial truck carrying electrical appliances has been destroyed in a major fire incident on the Apedwa-Kibi road in the Eastern Region, resulting in estimated losses of GH¢800,000. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about vehicle safety and fire prevention on Ghana's major transport corridors.

The Kia Rhino truck, registered GE 4273-26, caught fire at approximately 3:14am on Thursday, October 8, 2026, whilst parked at Amanfrom. The vehicle was loaded with refrigerators, generators, gas burners and chairs destined for Kumasi from Tema. The driver and two companions, who were resting during their journey, were alerted by passing motorists and managed to escape safely through the vehicle's windscreen.

Fire Service Response and Containment

The Kibi Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received the distress call and dispatched a crew led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Michael Kwakye. The team arrived at the scene at 3:32am to find the truck already fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters deployed two hose lines with foam in their efforts to combat the blaze, managing to bring it under control by 4:00am and fully extinguishing it at 4:28am.

The swift response by the GNFS prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding areas and ensured the safety of the three occupants, though no casualties were recorded. The investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing, with authorities yet to determine whether the fire originated from mechanical failure, electrical malfunction, or another source.

Why It Matters for Ghana

This incident raises important questions about vehicle maintenance standards and road safety on Ghana's commercial transport routes. The Apedwa-Kibi road is a significant corridor linking major trading hubs, and such incidents can disrupt supply chains for electrical appliances and consumer goods. The substantial financial loss—GH¢800,000—also underscores the economic impact of transport accidents on traders and businesses.

Road safety concerns have become increasingly prominent in Ghana, with the National Road Safety Authority regularly reporting incidents involving commercial vehicles. The early morning timing of this fire, when the vehicle occupants were resting, highlights the risks faced by drivers and passengers during long-distance journeys. The case also demonstrates the importance of reliable emergency response systems, as the GNFS's quick reaction prevented a potentially worse outcome.

For businesses involved in transport and trade, the incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for regular vehicle maintenance, proper insurance coverage, and adherence to safety protocols during long journeys. Traders moving high-value electrical goods should also consider security and fire prevention measures, particularly when vehicles are parked unattended.

Investigation Underway

The GNFS has not yet released the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the vehicle's mechanical condition, electrical systems, and any external factors that may have contributed to the incident. Such investigations are important for identifying systematic issues that could affect other vehicles on the road.
