KATH receives GH¢4m medical equipment boost from Ghana Medical Trust Fund

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has received a significant medical equipment donation valued at more than GH¢4 million from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), marking a major milestone in the Trust Fund's first year of operation. The handover includes a fully equipped Olympus endoscopy tower system, jaundice meters, and critical respiratory and anaesthesia consumables that will enhance the hospital's specialised healthcare delivery capacity.

The donation addresses a pressing infrastructure gap at Ghana's premier teaching hospital. KATH's Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, revealed that the hospital's existing endoscopy machine had become obsolete at over 10 years old, with the institution previously planning to spend approximately GH¢800,000 on a replacement. The timely intervention allows the hospital to redirect those funds towards other critical services and infrastructure projects.

Freeing up resources for expanded care

Dr Baidoo emphasised the strategic importance of the donation beyond the equipment itself. "The monies we were going to spend on these essential items can now be channelled into other services to make sure we deliver premium services to Ghanaians we serve," he stated. Among KATH's most significant projects currently underway is the construction of a cardiac intervention centre—a facility the 70-year-old hospital has never previously possessed. The GMTF's support has made this long-awaited project financially viable for the first time.

The equipment donation formed part of a larger consignment provided by Lifecare Technology Ghana to the Trust Fund. Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, confirmed that KATH was prioritised for this allocation due to the hospital's urgent clinical needs. She pledged continued support, stating: "We have done a lot for Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and we are ready to do more."

Rather than waiting for direct government budget allocations—often delayed or insufficient—the Trust Fund model mobilises equipment from corporate sources and channels it to hospitals with documented need. For KATH specifically, the freed-up funds create a ripple effect, allowing investment in other critical areas like cardiothoracic services that have long been constrained by limited capacity.

The establishment of a cardiac intervention centre at KATH would expand Ghana's capacity to handle complex cardiac conditions domestically, potentially reducing the need for costly overseas medical tourism whilst training the next generation of Ghanaian cardiac specialists. These systemic improvements at a teaching hospital ultimately strengthen Ghana's entire healthcare infrastructure.
