Ghana Army Passes Out 646 New Soldiers, Warns Against Social Media and Uniform Abuse

The Ghana Army has issued stern warnings to 646 newly trained soldiers completing their basic infantry training, urging them to safeguard the reputation of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) through responsible conduct both on and off duty. The cautions came during the passing-out parade of the Basic Infantry Training Course (BITC) 1-26 at the Army Recruit Training School in Shai Hills, Greater Accra, on Friday, 25 September 2026.

The recruits, who commenced training on 27 March, have completed six months of intensive instruction covering physical training, drill, tactics, weapon handling, fieldcraft, map reading, military law and first aid. Of the 650 who started the course, 646 successfully met the required standards, with four unable to complete due to medical and disciplinary reasons.

Key Warnings for New Soldiers

Brigadier General Edward Awaribey, the Reviewing Officer and General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Southern Command, delivered the principal address during the ceremony. He specifically warned the new soldiers against posting operational information, photographs or videos on social media platforms in ways that could compromise military operations or damage the GAF's reputation.

The soldiers were also cautioned against using their military uniforms for unauthorised activities, including debt collection, land-guard operations, fraudulent dealings or unnecessary disputes. Brigadier General Awaribey emphasised that wearing a military uniform does not place soldiers above the law and that all service members remain subject to Ghana's Constitution, national laws and Armed Forces regulations.

Additional warnings addressed illicit drug use and prohibited substances, with the Brigadier General also urging recruits to be mindful of their social circles, as friends and relatives may sometimes encourage soldiers to misuse their positions or uniforms.

The Ghana Army's emphasis on discipline and lawful conduct reflects broader national concerns about military professionalism and public trust in the Armed Forces. The army's explicit warnings about uniform abuse also address documented concerns about civilians impersonating soldiers or military personnel engaging in vigilante activities under the guise of their official roles.

Recognition and Career Guidance

Brigadier General Awaribey reminded the new soldiers that passing out marks the beginning, not the end, of their military careers. He encouraged them to approach subsequent training courses with humility and determination whilst maintaining high standards of discipline, integrity, courage, loyalty and professionalism.

Several recruits received awards for outstanding performance: Recruit Warrant Officer Class I Ebenezer Akwasi Midorse emerged as the Overall Best Recruit, winning the Chief of the Army Staff's Award and the Best in Tactics award. Recruit Warrant Officer Class II Sarah Nyarkowaa Twum was recognised as the Best All-Round Female Recruit, whilst others were recognised for excellence in drill, academics, fieldcraft, physical training, first aid and map reading. Kamina Company was adjudged the best company following competitions in cross-country and steeplechase events.

Receiving units have been urged to continue guiding, mentoring and developing the newly trained soldiers as they begin their operational roles within the GAF.
