GES Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar: Key Dates for Ghana's Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the comprehensive academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year, providing a detailed roadmap for all basic schools across the country. The calendar outlines term dates, vacation periods, mid-term breaks and the examination timetable for the final-year assessment, enabling schools, parents and pupils to plan effectively for the year ahead.

The approved schedule applies to all Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools nationwide. Regional Directors of Education have been tasked with distributing the calendar through their subordinate education offices to ensure every school receives clear guidance on implementation.

Term Breakdown and Holiday Periods

The 2026/2027 academic year is structured into three distinct terms. The first term will begin on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, and run for 15 weeks, concluding on Thursday, 17 December 2026. Pupils and staff will then observe Christmas vacation from 18 December 2026 to 4 January 2027.

The second term commences on Tuesday, 5 January 2027, and spans 12 weeks, ending on Thursday, 25 March 2027. This is followed by an Easter break running from 26 March to 19 April 2027. The third and final term begins on Tuesday, 20 April 2027, and continues for 14 weeks until Thursday, 22 July 2027, when the long summer vacation begins.

Throughout each term, schools will observe a mandatory two-day mid-term break to allow pupils and teachers rest and recovery. The first mid-term break is scheduled for 5–6 November 2026. Public holidays falling within the academic calendar will also be observed in accordance with national regulations.

BECE Examination Dates Confirmed

A critical component of the academic calendar is the scheduling of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the national assessment taken by final-year Junior High School pupils before progressing to Senior High School. The GES has confirmed that the 2027 BECE will be conducted from Wednesday, 5 May to Wednesday, 12 May 2027.
