Elmina's Coconut Grove Beach Resort wins Central Region hospitality award as Ghana tourism sector embraces digital innovation

Coconut Grove Beach Resort in Elmina has claimed the 3-Star Hotel of the Year award at the 2026 Central Regional Tourism Awards, recognising excellence in Ghana's hospitality sector at a time when regional tourism operators are increasingly competing on the West African stage. The award ceremony, held under the theme "Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders – The Black Star Experience", brought together industry leaders to celebrate hospitality providers driving growth in one of Ghana's most visited regions.

The recognition comes as Ghana's tourism sector navigates both opportunities and operational challenges. General Manager Victor Opoku Minta acknowledged the award whilst emphasising that the hospitality industry now operates within a competitive West African market requiring constant innovation. He flagged critical infrastructure issues affecting Central Region operators, particularly water supply disruptions caused by ongoing road construction, alongside concerns about tax components embedded in hotel service charges.

Digital transformation reshaping Ghana's tourism landscape

The Ghana Tourism Authority is positioning technology as central to the nation's tourism future. Deputy Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey highlighted how digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics are transforming how visitors discover, navigate, and experience Ghana. These tools are expected to make Ghana more accessible to international tourists whilst streamlining visitor services across the country.

Aggrey also stressed that modern tourism success depends less on singular attractions and more on holistic visitor experiences. This shift is prompting operators like Coconut Grove to innovate internally—implementing measures that sustain seamless operations despite external pressures. Regional hospitality providers are being urged to preserve and repackage the Central Region's distinctive cultural heritage, local cuisine, and historical sites to differentiate themselves in the competitive tourism market.

Why it matters for Ghana

The Central Region remains strategically important to Ghana's tourism sector. The region hosts 387 of the country's 7,109 licensed hospitality enterprises and attracts visitors to major attractions including Kakum National Park, Cape Coast Castle, and Elmina Castle—all ranked among Ghana's top 10 most visited sites. This positions the Central Region as the nation's second most visited destination.

Awards like these serve multiple purposes: they recognise operator excellence, encourage higher service standards across the industry, and enhance Ghana's reputation as a quality tourism destination. As Coconut Grove and other Central Region award winners prepare to compete at the National Tourism Awards, their success signals that Ghanaian hospitality providers are meeting international standards.

However, the award ceremony also underscored systemic challenges requiring government and regulatory attention. Water supply issues, tax structures, and operational cost pressures must be addressed to sustain the sector's growth. The Ghana Tourism Authority and Ministry of Tourism will need to balance regulatory requirements with practical support for operators seeking to maintain competitiveness in an increasingly sophisticated regional market.

The 2026 awards spanned four sectors—Accommodation, Food and Beverage, Travel Services, and Media—with judging based on comprehensive evidence including quality assurance reports, customer interviews, social media feedback, and unannounced facility inspections. This rigorous assessment framework, led by University of Cape Coast Professor Ishmael Mensah, ensures credibility and encourages continuous improvement across Ghana's hospitality sector.
