Ejisu Assembly blocked from voting on MCE removal as tensions escalate over alleged misconduct

Escalating tensions at the Ejisu Municipal Assembly reached a flashpoint on Thursday when a planned vote of no confidence against Municipal Chief Executive Jerryne Asante could not proceed after the Assembly Hall was locked, preventing members from entering the premises.

The failed bid to remove the MCE has exposed deep rifts within the Assembly over allegations of financial impropriety and administrative misconduct. Assembly members, who gathered outside the locked hall in symbolic protest attire—red and black clothing with red armbands—held a press conference to voice their frustration and outline their grievances against the MCE.

George Kuntu Blankson, Assembly Member for Kwamo Electoral Area, told reporters that members discovered the Assembly Hall locked when they arrived for the meeting. He stated that inquiries with the Works Department indicated the keys had been taken on the MCE's instructions, effectively preventing the vote from taking place.

The accusations against the MCE

The push to remove Asante stems from months of disputes centred on serious allegations of mismanagement and abuse of office. According to the aggrieved members, the most significant claim involves GH¢29,000 in property rates and business operating permit fees collected in August 2025 that they allege was diverted by the MCE and her personal aide for private use—specifically to purchase roofing sheets.

Beyond financial allegations, Assembly members have documented complaints from market traders regarding poor sanitation conditions and claims of extortion by the MCE's personal aide. These concerns were formally referred to the Assembly's Public Relations and Complaints Committee, which summoned the MCE in April 2026 and issued a two-week deadline for her to address the issues and refund any diverted funds. With that deadline having passed without action, the members gave the MCE one week to resign voluntarily.

Political intervention and legal standoff

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, attempted to defuse the situation by requesting that the vote be postponed to allow for dialogue aimed at resolving the dispute. However, the Assembly members rejected this intervention, asserting that neither the Regional Minister nor the MCE holds the legal authority to postpone a General Assembly meeting.

A heavy police presence was deployed to the Assembly premises to maintain order, reflecting the intensity of the dispute and heightened tensions among members.
