Afenyo-Markin Offers to Facilitate MP's Appearance Before EOCO in Ghana Jollof Probe

Ghana's Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has publicly offered to personally escort Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) if the agency requires his cooperation with ongoing investigations, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the opposition and law enforcement authorities.

The offer comes after an alleged attempt by EOCO officials to arrest the MP at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, 23 September. Baffour Awuah subsequently claimed the attempted arrest was connected to the Ghana Jollof TikTok account investigation and alleged it was politically motivated to silence his public defence of Salomey Baffoe, who is suspected of being connected to the account operator.

At a press conference, Baffour Awuah denied ever receiving any formal invitation from EOCO to assist with inquiries. Afenyo-Markin used the platform to signal the Minority's willingness to cooperate with the agency whilst simultaneously criticising what he characterised as excessive use of state power.

Minority Leadership Signals Cooperation Amid Tensions

Speaking directly to EOCO, Afenyo-Markin stated: "EOCO, if you need our brother Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah and you cannot have access to him, inform me. I will present him to you. The Minority leadership is around; none has travelled. We will present him for the right thing to be done." The statement appears designed to demonstrate opposition readiness to cooperate whilst framing any further actions by EOCO as unnecessary and heavy-handed.

However, Afenyo-Markin also launched a direct attack on the conduct of law enforcement, describing EOCO's reported actions as an excessive use of its mandate. His cryptic comment about "sending a woman to fight" appeared to reference the specific officer involved in the attempted arrest. He further called on President John Dramani Mahama to rein in what he described as appointees abusing their authority.

The Ghana Jollof TikTok account gained significant public attention for its satirical and often critical commentary on Ghanaian politics and public figures. EOCO's investigation into the account's operator and associated individuals has become a focal point for opposition concerns about government use of law enforcement agencies.

Baffour Awuah's alleged connection to the matter through his defence of Salomey Baffoe has drawn him into the investigation's orbit. The Minority's framing of the situation emphasises concerns that EOCO may be weaponising its investigative powers for political purposes rather than genuine law enforcement objectives.
