Woyome Throws Hat in Ring for NDC National Vice Chairperson Ahead of 2026 Delegates Congress
Alfred Agbesi Woyome, the businessman long associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has formally entered the race for the party's National Vice Chairperson position, filing his nomination in a move that is set to generate significant debate within party circles. His filing signals that the NDC's internal elections, scheduled for December 2026, are already heating up — and that some of the party's more controversial figures are keen to shape its future direction.
How the nomination was filed
Woyome's nomination was submitted on his behalf by Dr Catherine Deynu, a former Deputy National Women's Organiser of the NDC. Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Dr Deynu made the case that Woyome's years of financial and logistical support for the party have earned him the right to take on a more formal leadership role.
"Many people can attest to these facts. He has done a lot for the party, and this is the time for him to be at the helm of affairs to ensure that our grassroots members are empowered and that those at the constituency level have their capacity built," Dr Deynu said, adding that Woyome's vision includes sustainable job creation as a tool for strengthening the party from within.
His stated agenda centres on reinforcing the NDC's organisational structures at the grassroots and constituency levels — areas that party leaders widely acknowledge were critical to their success in the 2024 general elections and will be equally important heading into 2028.
What this means for the NDC
The NDC is due to hold its National Delegates Congress on Saturday, 13 December 2026, at which point the full complement of national executives will be elected. The congress forms a key part of the party's post-election reorganisation as it seeks to consolidate its hold on government and position itself for the 2028 general elections.
Woyome's entry into the race is not without complications. He remains one of Ghana's most high-profile figures in a long-running legal and financial controversy involving the State. He was at the centre of a landmark Supreme Court case in which the government sought to recover over GH₵51 million paid to him under a legal services contract that the court ruled was unlawful. The saga dragged on for years and drew sustained public attention to questions of accountability and the relationship between party financiers and state resources.
Whether NDC delegates will view his record as a liability or as evidence of loyalty and sacrifice for the party remains to be seen. Supporters argue that his contributions at the grassroots level are tangible and that he deserves recognition through a formal leadership position. Critics, however, are likely to question whether someone with such a contested public profile is the right face for a party seeking to project clean, accountable governance.
Why it matters for Ghana
Internal party elections in Ghana's two major parties — the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) — have a direct bearing on national politics. The individuals who occupy national executive positions help set strategic direction, manage resources, and mobilise supporters ahead of general elections. A National Vice Chairperson with the financial clout and networks that Woyome is said to possess could meaningfully influence how the NDC campaigns in 2028.
At the same time, Ghanaian voters and civil society have grown increasingly attentive to the backgrounds of those who hold influence within political parties, particularly in the wake of ongoing conversations about corruption, accountability, and the misuse of public funds. Woyome's candidacy will inevitably reignite those conversations and test how the NDC balances internal loyalty with its public image as a governing party.
