World Vision, Ahafo Districts Partner to Bring Clean Water and Sanitation to Rural Communities

World Vision Ghana has formalized a strategic partnership with Asunafo North Municipal and Asutifi North District Assemblies aimed at delivering universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services across targeted rural communities in the Ahafo region. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed in Goaso on Thursday, September 24, 2026, represents a coordinated effort to address critical infrastructure gaps that have left many villages without safely managed water facilities.

The three-way collaboration brings together the resources, expertise and local authority needed to tackle one of Ghana's persistent development challenges. Under the agreement, World Vision Ghana will supply technical expertise, training, and financial and material support, while the district assemblies will facilitate community engagement, contribute local resources, and enforce hygiene-promoting by-laws. This pooled approach recognizes that sustainable WASH coverage requires both external support and local institutional commitment.

Building Lasting Change, Not Just Infrastructure

Beyond installing water points and sanitation facilities, the initiative emphasises behavioral transformation and long-term sustainability. The programme integrates Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) strategies, which focus on changing hygiene practices and sanitation behaviours at the household and community level. This is complemented by the Nurturing Care Group framework and the Sesame WASH Up hygiene programme, indicating a holistic approach that targets families, including children.

Joshua Baidoo, Acting National Director of World Vision Ghana, articulated an ambitious target: achieving at least 90 per cent access to safely managed WASH services across both districts by the end of the project cycle. To ensure facilities do not fall into disrepair after installation—a common problem in rural water projects—the agreement includes three key sustainability mechanisms: a Professional Management Model to standardise facility oversight, a Water Facility Insurance scheme, and a Repayable Financing Fund to sustain and scale investment over time.

The initiative also prioritises safeguarding, gender equity and social accountability, recognizing that vulnerable groups including women, children and persons with disabilities often face barriers to accessing these essential services.

Why It Matters for Ghana

Access to clean water and sanitation remains unevenly distributed across Ghana, with rural areas particularly underserved. The Ahafo region, whilst economically significant as a mining area, still grapples with WASH deficits in many communities. This partnership signals a strategic focus on closing that gap in a region where improved water and sanitation can directly reduce water-borne diseases, improve school attendance—particularly for girls—and support economic productivity.

The emphasis on sustainability and local institutional strengthening is particularly noteworthy. Rather than a one-off project, the MoU establishes frameworks that can persist beyond the initial implementation phase, building the capacity of district structures to manage and maintain services long-term. This approach aligns with Ghana's broader development agenda of decentralised service delivery and community-led development.

For residents in Asunafo North and Asutifi North, the partnership offers a concrete pathway to services that many take for granted in urban centres but which remain a daily challenge in rural areas. Coordinating Directors Benjamin Owusu Afriyie and Abdul-Aziz Gafaru committed their assemblies' full support to the intervention, signalling political will at the local government level—a crucial ingredient for success.
