Wesley Girls' High School Counts Down to 190th Anniversary with Major Fundraising Drive
Wesley Girls' High School, the Cape Coast institution widely regarded as one of Ghana's most prestigious secondary schools, is gearing up for a landmark 190th anniversary celebration set to unfold across 2026. The year-long programme, themed "Honouring Our Roots, Igniting Tomorrow," will blend reflection on the school's distinguished history with a determined push to secure its future through targeted infrastructure projects.
Nearly Two Centuries of Girls' Education
The school traces its origins to September 1836, when Mrs Harriet Wrigley — wife of the second Methodist missionary posted to the then Gold Coast — established a small girls' school in Cape Coast. From those modest beginnings, the institution has grown into a nationally celebrated force in female education, producing generations of women who have shaped Ghana's public life, professions, and beyond.
Key Events on the Anniversary Calendar
- 3rd July 2026: Official launch at Wesley Towers Auditorium in Accra, including the unveiling of the anniversary logo and the start of a major fundraising campaign.
- 15th August 2026: Launch of the official 190th anniversary cloth, open to students, old girls, and well-wishers.
- September 2026: A homecoming weekend in Cape Coast featuring a float procession, a community health outreach, and a Friday Evening Gospel Concert.
- The celebrations will climax with the Grand Wrigley Durbar at Victoria Park in Cape Coast, expected to draw old girls, teachers, and supporters from across Ghana and around the world.
Two Legacy Projects at the Heart of the Fundraise
Central to the anniversary is a fundraising drive for two infrastructure projects. The first is the construction of a modern STEAM Kitchen at Wesley Girls' High School, designed to blend food preparation with science, innovation, and practical learning. The second is a four-classroom kindergarten block for Wesley Girls' Basic School, aimed at improving the learning environment for the institution's youngest pupils.
Donations can be made through the Wesley Girls' High School Old Girls' Association account at Consolidated Bank Ghana, Manet Towers Branch — Account Number 2153063640004 — or via Mobile Money on 0249869476, registered under the name Wesley Girls' Old Girls' Association Project. The school is encouraging old girls, parents, corporate bodies, and the general public to contribute towards securing the institution's future for coming generations.
