Aged 13, Ghanaian Girl Nana Akua Publishes Her First Novel — And Has a Message for Every Young Dreamer

A 13-year-old Ghanaian girl has accomplished what many adults only dream of — writing and publishing a full novel. Nana Akua Adomaa Adu-Mante has released her debut work, Motel Mystery, a tale of adventure centred on two best friends whose parents forbid them from venturing into an eerie, rumour-laden motel that the whole neighbourhood fears.

Nana Akua says the story was born from a simple but gripping question she posed to herself: what if there existed an old motel so shrouded in strange rumours that no one dared go near it? From that single thought, she built an entire narrative, balancing the demands of schoolwork alongside the creative discipline of writing a book — no small feat for someone still in her early teens.

Her father, Kwame Adu-Mante, revealed that his daughter's love for reading showed itself as early as age nine, when she could devour storybooks and then retell every detail from memory. Recognising her gift, the family steadily fed her appetite with more books. He praised her achievement as a demonstration of creativity, intellectual curiosity, and discipline, adding that at a time when social media competes fiercely for young people's attention, Nana Akua chose the path of literary creation.

The Education Director for the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality, Madam Gloria Biney-Gontoh, also weighed in, commending the young author and describing her accomplishment as a powerful example of what becomes possible when children are genuinely encouraged to develop their natural abilities. She stressed the need to build a culture in Ghana that supports young people in expressing themselves creatively.

Nana Akua herself had an encouraging word for her peers across the country: "Believe in yourself. Your ideas are valuable. Your talents are important. Your dreams matter. Never be afraid to try something new." Her father echoed that sentiment, urging parents to allow children the freedom to explore their own talents rather than steering them solely towards paths chosen by adults.

With Motel Mystery now in readers' hands, Nana Akua Adomaa Adu-Mante hopes her story sparks a wider conversation about nurturing young talent in Ghana — and proves, once and for all, that meaningful achievement has no minimum age requirement.
