Telecel Ghana launches 4G infrastructure at UHAS, boosting campus connectivity ahead of new intake

Telecel Ghana has strengthened mobile connectivity infrastructure at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho, Volta Region, with the activation of a new 4G cell site designed to support the university's growing digital learning environment and research activities. The deployment was strategically timed to go live before the arrival of more than 2,000 first-year students, ensuring the network would be fully tested and stable from day one of the academic intake.

The project reflects Telecel Ghana's broader nationwide network modernisation drive, which has seen the operator complete over 1,000 network enhancement projects across the country this year. These initiatives include capacity upgrades, transitions from 3G to 4G infrastructure, and deployment of new sites in strategically important locations to improve coverage and service quality nationwide.

Why this matters for Ghana

University campuses have become critical digital hubs in Ghana's education ecosystem, where students increasingly depend on reliable connectivity for online learning, virtual collaboration and research. UHAS, as one of Ghana's key centres for healthcare and research education, represents exactly the type of high-demand location where network investment directly supports educational outcomes and workforce development. Strong connectivity at tertiary institutions helps level the playing field for students, particularly those from remote areas, by enabling equal access to online resources and collaborative learning tools.

This investment also signals how Ghana's telecom sector is adapting infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing digital economy. As universities expand enrolment and digital-first teaching methods become standard, network operators must anticipate infrastructure needs rather than simply react to congestion complaints. Telecel's proactive approach—activating the site before student arrival rather than after network strain became apparent—sets a standard for customer service responsiveness in Ghana's telecommunications landscape.

Student experience and operational benefits

Early feedback from UHAS students has been positive. Edward Benevolent Nyamekye, President of the Federal Students Representative Council, noted that the connectivity improvement has been immediately noticeable and has enhanced student life on campus. For a university population that relies on mobile networks for both academic and personal communication, such improvements are not merely convenience features but essential infrastructure for educational participation.

Telecel Ghana's Head of Customer Operations at the Enterprise Business Unit, Jerry Ayeduvor, emphasised that the deployment strategy prioritised customer experience. Beyond simply installing a cell site, the company worked to ensure students would also benefit from tailored rewards, self-service digital options and responsive issue resolution. This approach recognises that infrastructure quality is only one component of overall service delivery.

Telecel's network expansion strategy

This UHAS deployment is one piece of Telecel Ghana's systematic approach to network modernisation. The operator's strategy focuses on three key areas: expanding capacity in high-demand locations, modernising legacy infrastructure through 3G-to-4G upgrades, and deploying new sites in strategic communities. According to the company's statement, this proactive investment strategy is designed to support Ghana's digital economy growth and ensure customers, businesses and institutions have access to consistently reliable connectivity.

The UHAS project also demonstrates how telecommunications infrastructure investment intersects with Ghana's education and economic development priorities, as universities increasingly serve as anchors for innovation, research and digital skills development in their regions.
