South African Police General Shot Days Before Testifying at Corruption Inquiry

A senior South African police officer has survived a brazen assassination attempt in Johannesburg, authorities have confirmed. Maj-Gen Feroz Khan, the suspended deputy head of crime intelligence, was shot on Sunday evening whilst driving home and was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, according to local media reports.

The timing of the attack has raised serious concerns, as Khan was scheduled to appear before a high-profile public inquiry into criminality within South Africa's police service within days of the shooting. Despite this, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe cautioned against jumping to conclusions. "It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the inquiry," she said in a statement on Monday.

The Madlanga Commission

The inquiry, formally known as the Madlanga Commission, was established following allegations made by senior police officer Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi last July that organised crime syndicates had infiltrated government structures. Khan's name surfaced multiple times during proceedings, including in connection with a botched drug operation in Johannesburg in 2021. He was also reportedly set to face questions about alleged links to controversial politician Julius Malema and political operative Brown Mogotsi.

Khan's legal troubles extend beyond the inquiry. He, along with another senior officer and a businessman, was arrested in May on charges relating to the alleged illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals. The case stems from a 2021 incident at OR Tambo International Airport, where the businessman was found carrying nearly 76 grammes of unwrought gold. The businessman claimed he had been operating as an undercover agent for senior police officials, but prosecutors say investigators found that "no authorised undercover operation involving precious metals existed at the time." Khan had been released on bail and had not publicly responded to the allegations.

South African police say investigations into Sunday's shooting are ongoing. The incident adds to growing concerns about violence targeting individuals connected to state corruption probes — a troubling pattern that has drawn widespread attention across southern Africa and beyond.
