South Africa's prosperity hinges on Africa – MTN boss warns against xenophobia

MTN Group Chairman Mcebisi Jonas has issued a stark warning against growing xenophobic rhetoric in South Africa, arguing that anti-foreigner sentiment undermines both the nation's values and its economic future. Speaking during a funeral service, Jonas stressed that hostility toward foreign nationals often masks deeper governance and socio-economic failures that require genuine policy solutions.

The business leader emphasised South Africa's integral place within the African continent, declaring: "South Africa is nothing without Africa. And Africa is nothing without South Africa." He argued that the country's economic fortunes are inextricably linked to broader African growth and prosperity, making regional cooperation essential for sustainable development.

Jonas called on South Africans to reject prejudice based on nationality, ethnicity, or origin, insisting such attitudes contradict fundamental principles of equality and human dignity. "We cannot judge people by their origin. We cannot determine the legal status of people by their origin," he stated.

His remarks reflect ongoing concerns across the region about periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence in South Africa and the tendency to blame foreign nationals for unemployment and economic hardship. Regional leaders and human rights groups have raised alarm over these trends, which often distract from structural economic challenges requiring urgent policy intervention.
