Sarkodie, Kofi Kinaata, Lydia Forson Join Chorus of Frustration as Accra Floods Strike Again
Accra has been hit by another round of devastating floods, prompting some of Ghana's most prominent entertainers and public figures to speak out on social media. Stars including rapper Sarkodie, highlife artist Kofi Kinaata, and actress and activist Lydia Forson voiced their frustration, with their reactions closely mirroring the mood of ordinary Ghanaians watching their streets and homes go under water.
The flooding, which has become a recurring crisis in the capital, once again exposed the vulnerability of low-lying communities and overwhelmed drainage systems across the city. Residents in badly affected areas were seen wading through murky waters, with vehicles submerged and properties damaged.
The celebrities' responses ranged from despair to outright anger at successive governments' failure to find lasting solutions. The sentiment that conditions are deteriorating year on year was a common thread, with many questioning why billions spent on infrastructure have not translated into flood-resilient communities.
Lydia Forson, known for her outspoken commentary on social issues, used the moment to challenge leaders to move beyond condolences and deliver concrete action. Kofi Kinaata and Sarkodie similarly expressed disbelief that the situation continues to repeat itself with little meaningful change on the ground.
The annual flooding in Accra has long been linked to poor urban planning, illegal construction on waterways, choked gutters, and inadequate drainage infrastructure. Civil society groups and engineers have repeatedly called for a comprehensive, long-term flood management strategy rather than short-term emergency responses.
Authorities have yet to release a full damage assessment from the latest incident, but images and videos circulating on social media painted a grim picture of the scale of destruction, renewing calls for urgent and sustained government intervention.
