Rain Won't Save You: GNFS Warns Ghanaians That House Fires Remain a Danger All Year Round

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is urging the public to abandon the notion that wet weather protects homes from fire, warning that domestic fire incidents continue to be recorded throughout the rainy season.

Speaking on behalf of the Service, ADO I Afua Pongo, Sekondi Metro Deputy Regional Public Relations Officer, said the misconception has bred a dangerous sense of complacency among many households. She noted that while bushfires may subside with the rains, indoor fire hazards linked to human behaviour and electrical faults remain just as prevalent.

"The fact that it is raining does not mean homes are safe from fire outbreaks. Many fire incidents are caused by human activities and electrical faults, which can still occur in any season," ADO I Pongo stated.

She added that the risk may even rise during rainy periods due to erratic power supply, which often leads residents to overload sockets and run multiple appliances simultaneously. Poor maintenance of gas cylinders and faulty wiring are also among the leading causes of house fires recorded at this time of year.

What Households Should Do

  • Regularly inspect electrical wiring and avoid overloading sockets
  • Ensure gas cylinders are properly maintained and stored safely
  • Keep a fire extinguisher accessible in the home where possible
  • Store emergency contact numbers, including those of the GNFS, in an easily reachable place

The GNFS described the public education drive as part of its ongoing nationwide campaign to reduce preventable fire incidents. The Service encouraged all residents to take fire safety seriously regardless of the season.
