Police arrest 64 suspects in major firearms crackdown at Achimota lounge

Ghana's Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police, working with the National SWAT team, has arrested 64 suspects following a significant operation targeting the unlawful possession and trafficking of firearms at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 in Greater Accra.

The operation, conducted on Friday, September 25, was triggered by resident complaints about suspected criminal activities at the venue, including allegations that firearms were being openly displayed and traded. During the raid, police identified an unregistered blue Acura vehicle containing a pistol holster, which was impounded and sent to Police Headquarters for investigation when no one claimed ownership.

High-profile arrests reveal impersonation scheme

Among those arrested was an individual claiming to be Theophilus Ashon, who identified himself as a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Operations. However, Police verification established that Ashon was not a legitimate member of the Ghana Police Service. A search of his person led to the recovery of a loaded Smith & Wesson pistol with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The investigation expanded when officers moved to Atico, where they apprehended Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills. A search of Mills' residence yielded a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition: three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, and 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition.
