Mourinho Injected Himself in the Toe to Prove a Point — Player Still Refused
José Mourinho, one of football's most decorated and outspoken managers, has shared a remarkable story that perfectly captures his reputation for psychological mind games and uncompromising standards. The Portuguese tactician described an incident in which a player refused to take a minor medical injection that would have allowed him to feature in a match.
Rather than simply dropping the player or arguing with him, Mourinho chose a far more theatrical approach. He removed his shoe and sock, placed his foot directly in front of the player's face, and instructed the club doctor to administer the injection to him instead.
"I took off my shoe and socks, and I put my foot right in front of his face and I told the doctor: 'Give me the injection'. And he gave it to me and my toe was perfect," Mourinho recalled, clearly relishing the retelling of the episode.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss said his intention was to demonstrate that the procedure was entirely harmless and to encourage the player to follow his lead. The attempt, however, did not go as planned. The player reportedly looked at his manager and flatly responded: "No, you are crazy."
Mourinho revealed that the player in question never again featured in a match under his management after the incident. The story, while entertaining, sheds light on the high-pressure environment Mourinho demands of his squads and the lengths he will go to in order to make a point about sacrifice and commitment.
Throughout a managerial career that has spanned clubs across England, Spain, Italy and Portugal, Mourinho has consistently emphasised the role of mentality and resilience in elite football — values he clearly expects his players to share, even when a needle is involved.
