Mining Sector Steps Up: Chamber of Mines Donates GH¢2m Relief to Flood Victims

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has stepped in to support thousands of Ghanaians affected by devastating floods, donating relief items worth approximately GH¢2 million to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). The relief package, which includes essential supplies such as mattresses, bed sheets, rice, wellington boots, hand gloves and beverages, marks a significant corporate contribution to the government's disaster response efforts.

The donation comes as communities across Ghana continue to grapple with the aftermath of severe flooding that has destroyed homes, disrupted education and livelihoods, and in some cases claimed lives. Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Terlabi, who received the items on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, highlighted the scale of the crisis facing affected families and praised the private sector's willingness to fill critical gaps in disaster relief.

Corporate Support in Times of Crisis

The Chamber's contribution underscores the role that the private sector, particularly major industries such as mining, can play in national emergencies. Mr Terlabi commended the Chamber and its member companies for their swift response, noting that the support comes at a particularly difficult moment when many families are displaced and children's education has been disrupted. He reassured the donors that NADMO would ensure transparent and fair distribution of the items to those most in need, while also calling on other corporate institutions, faith-based organisations and philanthropists to contribute similarly.

The Minister recalled the Chamber's previous humanitarian efforts, including assistance to communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage, highlighting a pattern of corporate responsibility during national disasters. However, he was clear that government resources alone cannot address such crises, emphasising that stronger public-private partnerships are essential for effective disaster management.

Building Better Infrastructure and Prevention

Beyond immediate relief, stakeholders are increasingly focused on long-term solutions to reduce Ghana's vulnerability to flooding. Mr Terlabi outlined several critical measures, including improved physical planning and urban development, investment in effective drainage infrastructure across major cities and towns, protection of waterways from encroachment and pollution, proper waste management systems, and strengthened early warning mechanisms.

Ken Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, extended the industry's sympathy to affected communities whilst calling for increased government investment in NADMO itself. He argued that strengthening NADMO's capacity through enhanced funding would enable the organisation to undertake preventive interventions before disasters strike, potentially saving lives and reducing economic losses. This perspective highlights a growing recognition that reactive relief, whilst essential, must be complemented by proactive disaster risk reduction.
