KNUST's New Vice-Chancellor Sworn In: Otumfuo Emphasises Dialogue Over Command

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has a new leader following the swearing-in of Professor Christian Agyare as its 13th Vice-Chancellor. At the inauguration ceremony, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the university's Chancellor, set clear expectations for the incoming leader's tenure, emphasising that managing the institution successfully will require dialogue, consultation and transparency rather than authoritarian approaches.

Leadership Through Consensus

Administering the oath of office, the Asantehene underscored the importance of Professor Agyare adopting an inclusive leadership style that builds confidence across all university stakeholders. Drawing on Agyare's previous experience as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Otumfuo acknowledged his familiarity with the concerns of students, staff, alumni and other members of the university community. However, the Chancellor stressed that the Vice-Chancellor role demands a broader vision capable of uniting rather than dividing the institution.

"Your responsibility will be to ensure that differences are managed through the university's established structures, through fairness, respect and openness," Otumfuo stated during the ceremony. He cautioned that internal disputes, if mishandled, risk damaging public confidence in one of Ghana's most prestigious tertiary institutions. Instead, he argued, such challenges should be used as opportunities to strengthen the university's credibility and cohesion.

KNUST's leadership transition carries significance beyond the institution's campus gates. As one of Ghana's leading research and innovation hubs, the university plays a critical role in national development through knowledge generation, human capital development and industry partnerships. The quality of leadership directly affects the university's ability to contribute meaningfully to Ghana's economic recovery and youth employment.

Dr Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff at the Presidency, reinforced this point during the ceremony, challenging KNUST to deepen its contribution to national development. He noted that whilst Ghana's economy shows signs of recovery, this must translate into real opportunities for young people. "Our task is to convert growth into jobs, knowledge into enterprises and national progress into visible improvements in people's lives," Debrah said, positioning KNUST as indispensable to this agenda.

Building on Institutional Strength

Professor Agyare, who succeeds Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, has committed to building on KNUST's achievements through innovation, strengthened partnerships and a culture of shared responsibility. In his response during the ceremony, he called for collective action to elevate the institution. "The journey ahead is one of shared purpose, and I invite every member of our community to join hands as we move from excellence to eminence," he declared.

The investiture brought together academia, traditional and religious leaders, and political figures, reflecting the broad stakeholder interest in KNUST's direction. The emphasis by both the Chancellor and government representatives on dialogue and innovation suggests a shared commitment to positioning the university as a catalyst for Ghana's socio-economic progress during an important period of national recovery.
