IC Asset Managers Brings Regulated Investment Platform to MTN Mobile Money Users Across Ghana
IC Asset Managers has taken a significant step toward democratising investment in Ghana by launching IC Wealth directly on the MTN MoMo platform, eliminating traditional barriers that have kept millions of ordinary Ghanaians from accessing regulated investment products. The partnership, unveiled at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, makes the IC Liquidity Fund available to MoMo customers who can now invest, monitor their portfolios and withdraw funds entirely through the app they use daily.
The integration represents a pragmatic shift in how investment services reach Ghana's population. Rather than expecting customers to adapt their behaviour, the platform meets them where they already are. Users simply navigate to Financial Services, select Investing, and access IC Wealth. The streamlined onboarding process, built on existing mobile money customer data, eliminates the need for bank accounts, physical branch visits or additional paperwork—historically significant obstacles for retail investors in Ghana.
Institutional Expertise Meets Mass Market Access
Isaac Adomako Boamah, Chief Executive Officer of IC Asset Managers (Ghana) Ltd, emphasised that the partnership extends the firm's 25-year track record in managing institutional investments to everyday Ghanaians. "We believe the future of wealth management is not about asking people to change their behaviour. It is about meeting them where they already are," he stated at the launch.
The IC Liquidity Fund, the cornerstone product available through the service, is structured as a mutual fund designed to help individuals and institutions grow cash reserves while maintaining liquidity. The fund invests in high-quality fixed income securities issued or backed by the Government of Ghana and selected licensed universal banks, offering a low-risk investment option for those seeking returns above traditional savings rates.
Paapa Osei, Head of Legal and Reputation Management at MobileMoney Fintech Ltd, framed the launch as part of a broader evolution in Ghana's digital financial services. He noted that mobile money has successfully enabled payments, airtime purchases and bill payments for years, but the next frontier is enabling wealth management. The partnership builds on precedent: IC Securities and MTN previously worked together during the 2018 MTN Ghana Initial Public Offering, allowing Ghanaians to purchase shares through mobile phones.
Regulatory Framework Underpins Consumer Confidence
Critically, the IC Liquidity Fund operates as a licensed collective investment scheme regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Client assets are held by a licensed custodian, and the platform complies with SEC requirements for disclosure, cybersecurity, data protection and ongoing supervision. This regulatory standing addresses a key concern for potential retail investors—assurance that their funds are protected and managed according to established standards.
Anthony Degbato, Head of Investment Management at the SEC, representing the Director-General, described the initiative as a significant milestone in developing Ghana's capital market. He highlighted its alignment with the SEC's Capital Market Master Plan, which aims to broaden investor participation across the population. Degbato also referenced the SEC Directive issued on 23 June 2026, requiring market operators, fintech providers and online investment platform operators to obtain appropriate registration and licensing by 31 August 2026.
While welcoming regulatory oversight, Adomako Boamah stressed its importance in building public confidence at scale. "Regulation is what makes trust possible at this scale," he said, urging Ghanaians to verify that any investment platform they use is SEC-licensed.
Why It Matters for Ghana
Financial inclusion remains a critical challenge in Ghana. Many Ghanaians save regularly but lack convenient, affordable access to investment products, often leaving savings idle in non-interest-bearing accounts. This launch addresses that gap by reducing friction and lowering minimum barriers to entry. With millions of Ghanaians already using MTN MoMo for daily transactions, integrating investment services into an existing, trusted platform removes psychological and practical obstacles.
The initiative also signals growing collaboration between Ghana's financial institutions and fintech platforms to deepen capital market participation. As more Ghanaians invest in regulated instruments, demand for capital increases, potentially strengthening the domestic investment ecosystem and reducing reliance on foreign borrowing.
However, the SEC reminder that all investments carry risk—despite the IC Liquidity Fund's low-risk design—underscores the importance of investor education as these services expand to less financially sophisticated populations.
