GWL to Cut Water Supply to Eastern Accra, Tema for Three Days in August Pipeline Overhaul

Residents and businesses across eastern Greater Accra and the Tema Metropolis face a three-day water supply interruption beginning Thursday, August 6, 2026, as Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) undertakes critical maintenance on major transmission pipelines connecting Kpong to Tema. The utility has advised affected communities to stock water supplies in advance and prepare for potential service disruptions until Saturday, August 8.

The maintenance programme targets significant deterioration across the Kpong–Tema transmission network. GWL engineering teams identified more than 300 metres of compromised sections within the 21-inch and 42-inch pipelines that pose risks of major failures and water loss. To execute the replacement work, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down whilst five separate pipeline sections undergo isolation and replacement.

The outage will impact a vast swathe of Greater Accra's eastern corridor. Residents in Afienya, Gbetsile, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone and Dawhenya should expect supply interruptions and reduced water pressure. All communities within Tema Metropolis, including Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua and Teshie, will also be affected. Upstream communities such as Kpong, Akuse, Somanya and Atimpoku are equally impacted.

GWL has called on hospitals, health facilities and essential service providers to establish contingency arrangements. The utility stated it would deploy water tankers to support critical institutions where operationally feasible during the maintenance window.
