Ghana launches Africa's first HND in Paramedical Trichology as ATU and Abrantie College expand cosmetology pathways

Ghana has marked a significant milestone in vocational and technical education with the accreditation of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Paramedical Trichology—described as the first of its kind across Africa. The qualification, developed through a partnership between Accra Technical University (ATU) and Abrantie College, addresses a long-standing gap in Ghana's cosmetology education system and promises to reshape career pathways for thousands of students in the beauty and hair care sector.

The accreditation represents more than just a new certificate. For years, Ghanaian students completing National Certificate II (NC II) in cosmetology faced a dead-end: no recognised HND route existed to enable them to progress toward bachelor's degrees. The new programme eliminates that barrier, offering advanced training in hair and scalp health while creating a clear educational ladder from vocational to university-level study.

How the programme works

The HND in Paramedical Trichology was developed after months of research and consultation involving both institutions and industry practitioners. Students admitted to the programme will receive specialised training in hair and scalp health management, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills demanded by modern cosmetology workplaces.

ATU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amevi Acakpovi has confirmed that admission will be carefully controlled to maintain academic quality. Prospective students who do not meet entry requirements will have the option to undertake a preparatory Pre-HND programme at Abrantie College before enrolling in the full HND qualification.

Even more ambitiously, ATU is already developing a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme in the same field. The timeline is deliberately aligned so that pioneer HND students will be able to progress directly to the bachelor's level upon completion of their studies, ensuring no educational breaks or unnecessary delays.

Why it matters for Ghana

This development carries significant implications for Ghana's technical education and economic development. The cosmetology and hair care industry is a major economic sector in Ghana, employing hundreds of thousands of people across salons, spas, training institutes and related businesses. Most practitioners, however, lack formal qualifications beyond basic certificates, limiting their earning potential and professional recognition.

By creating a recognised qualification pathway, Ghana is professionalising an industry that has historically been undervalued academically. The HND qualification will allow graduates to command higher salaries, access better job opportunities, and potentially establish their own businesses with greater credibility and market standing.

The initiative also demonstrates how Ghana's technical universities can innovate to fill genuine skills gaps rather than simply replicating traditional academic programmes. The partnership model between ATU and Abrantie College—uniting university resources with hands-on training expertise—offers a blueprint that other institutions could replicate across different vocational sectors.

Additionally, positioning Ghana as home to Africa's first such qualification could attract regional students and strengthen the country's reputation as a hub for technical excellence in West Africa.

Background and future plans

This accreditation flows from a Memorandum of Understanding signed between ATU and Abrantie College in September 2024. That agreement committed both institutions to strengthening training across fashion, cosmetology and related fields, with the explicit goal of creating progression routes from vocational training to higher education.

The visit by Abrantie College's Director, Dr. King David Thompson, to ATU leadership on 6 August 2026 was both a courtesy and a planning session—discussing implementation details and the subsequent development of the bachelor's programme that will allow HND graduates to continue their studies without interruption.
