GES Sets July 20 to August 7 for 2026 BECE School Selection Window

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that all candidates writing the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will have just over two weeks to select their preferred Senior High Schools (SHSs) and other second-cycle institutions. The selection window opens on Monday, 20 July and closes on Friday, 7 August 2026, as part of the annual Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

This timeline comes after the GES issued a directive to all regional and district education authorities, signalling the start of a comprehensive preparation phase aimed at ensuring the placement process runs smoothly and transparently across the country.

Training Programme for Education Officials

Ahead of the selection period, the GES will conduct a nationwide training and sensitisation programme for all Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. The training is scheduled from Wednesday, 15 July to Tuesday, 28 July 2026, at various Regional Education Offices nationwide.

The objective is to equip education managers with a thorough understanding of the 2026 School Selection Guidelines and Placement Procedures. According to Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division (Secondary), the training will provide "deeper insight into the selection guidelines and enable effective oversight throughout the exercise."

Regional Directors have been tasked with communicating details to all subordinate education authorities and ensuring their full participation. The GES will supply each training session with a detailed itinerary and list of attendees to facilitate proper implementation.

Why This Matters for Ghana

The CSSPS is one of Ghana's most important annual education processes, affecting hundreds of thousands of Junior High School leavers and their families every year. A well-organised and transparent placement system is critical for several reasons.

  • Access to secondary education: The placement process determines which senior high schools, technical institutions and vocational training centres receive qualified candidates, directly shaping young Ghanaians' educational pathways and future opportunities.
  • Reducing errors and complaints: Previous years have seen disputes over placements, delayed school reporting and confusion among parents and candidates. Proper training of district education officials helps minimise these issues.
  • National consistency: With training across all 16 regions and 260-plus districts, the GES aims to ensure that guidelines are interpreted and applied uniformly, preventing regional disparities in how candidates are advised and placed.
  • Parental confidence: Clear communication and standardised procedures help restore public trust in the placement system, which has faced criticism for delays and lack of transparency.

The sensitisation programme specifically addresses these concerns by helping education managers provide accurate guidance to candidates, parents and guardians, minimising placement errors and ensuring consistent application of rules nationwide.

Timeline at a Glance

  • 15–28 July 2026: Training and sensitisation for education officials
  • 20 July–7 August 2026: BECE candidates select their preferred schools

Candidates who miss the August 7 deadline will not be included in the 2026 placement cycle, so timely communication from schools and education authorities is essential. District education officials will play a key role in ensuring that every candidate understands the selection process, the deadline and which schools are available to them based on their BECE results.
