From construction site to top graduate: How MTN scholarship transformed Legon engineer's future

Daniel Agudey Doe's journey through the University of Ghana reads like a testament to resilience and determination. The Computer Engineering graduate has emerged as the best student in his programme—a remarkable achievement given that just years earlier, he was working construction sites during university holidays to afford tuition and often going without meals on campus.

Before receiving financial aid, Doe faced the constant threat of dropping out entirely. The weight of paying for tuition, hostel fees and basic survival needs forced him to prioritise earning money over academics. "I was simply trying to make it through university. If things became impossible and I had to drop out, at least I could say I had given university my best attempt," he reflected on those difficult years.

The turning point: How scholarship support changed everything

Doe's situation transformed when he was selected as a beneficiary of the MTN Ghana Bright Scholarship. The programme covered his tuition, hostel accommodation and provided additional support for laptops, books and study materials—essentials that had previously been luxuries he could not afford.

With these financial pressures lifted, Doe experienced something many university students take for granted: the ability to focus entirely on studies. "For the first time, I had the privilege many financially stable students have, the ability to focus on my studies without constantly worrying about tuition, hostel fees or survival," he explained.

This newfound stability allowed him to engage fully in academic life. He participated actively in group studies, devoted more time to coursework, and ultimately graduated as the Best Graduating Computer Engineering Student. Without the scholarship, Doe believes he would not have completed his degree, possibly dropping out as early as his second year.

Impact of MTN's Bright Scholarship programme and what it means for Ghana

The MTN Ghana Foundation introduced the Bright Scholarship programme in 2017, and its reach has been substantial. To date, the initiative has supported 1,220 students across tertiary institutions nationwide. Beyond merely covering fees, the programme has demonstrably elevated academic outcomes: 17 scholars have graduated as valedictorians or best students at their institutions, whilst 299 have earned first-class honours.

Doe's story underscores a critical reality in Ghana's higher education landscape. Whilst the country boasts world-class universities like Legon, many talented students cannot realise their potential due to financial constraints. Stories like his highlight both the human cost of educational inequality and the transformative power of targeted scholarship interventions. When deserving students receive support, the benefits ripple outward—not just for individuals, but for families and communities.

Currently undertaking his National Service at Amalitech as a Data Engineer, Doe is laying the groundwork for his long-term ambitions in Machine Learning and Robotics. He is also exploring postgraduate study in Robotics or a combined Robotics and Artificial Intelligence programme.

Doe credited his scholarship coordinator, Mr George, for providing guidance that helped shape his career path. His success story serves as both an inspiration to other financially disadvantaged students and a validation of corporate-backed scholarship schemes that create genuine educational pathways in Ghana.
