Finance Ministry Returns Office Building to Ghana Statistical Service After Extended Period
The Ministry of Finance has officially returned a previously occupied office building to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), marking the conclusion of an extended period during which the block served Finance Ministry operations. The formal handover ceremony took place at the GSS headquarters in Accra on 16 July 2026, with Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson presenting the keys to Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu.
The transfer represents a significant development for Ghana's statistical infrastructure, as the GSS regains additional office space to support its operations. The Ghana Statistical Service plays a critical role in the country's development agenda by collecting, analysing and disseminating official statistics that inform policy-making across all government sectors.
Expanding GSS Capacity
The return of this office block provides the GSS with enhanced physical space to accommodate its workforce and expand its statistical collection and analysis capabilities. As Ghana continues to develop and implement data-driven policies across health, education, economic planning and other sectors, having adequate office infrastructure becomes increasingly important for the service to fulfil its mandate effectively.
The restored facility could enable the GSS to strengthen its survey operations, improve its data management systems, and enhance its capacity to produce timely and reliable statistics that support decision-making at the national level.
Why This Matters for Ghana
Access to accurate and comprehensive official statistics is fundamental to Ghana's development planning and governance. The GSS is responsible for conducting vital data collection exercises, including population and housing censuses, labour force surveys, and living standards surveys that provide the evidence base for government programmes and international comparisons.
By returning this office space, the government demonstrates its commitment to strengthening institutional capacity within its statistical services. Better-resourced statistical agencies typically produce higher-quality data more efficiently, which benefits researchers, policymakers, development partners and citizens who rely on official statistics for decision-making.
The handover also signals improved coordination between government ministries in managing public resources and infrastructure. Ensuring that office facilities are allocated to the agencies best positioned to utilise them serves the broader goal of improving public sector efficiency and service delivery across Ghana's government apparatus.
