FIFA launches grassroots women's football drive in Volta Region with 300 schoolgirls

FIFA is bringing its global push to expand women's football to Ghana's Volta Region, with twenty basic schools selected to participate in a major grassroots campaign designed to introduce young girls to the sport and identify emerging talent. The one-day event, scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, at the WAFA Academy in Fiavie, will gather approximately 300 girls for intensive football training, skills workshops and interactive games aimed at building confidence and encouraging long-term participation in the sport.

The participating schools span communities across the Volta Region, including Toje, Fievie, Cuniberto, Sogakope, Sokpoe, Tefle, Agorkpo, Hlevi, Toklokpo, Avegorme, Vume and Amedzo, ensuring broad geographical reach and access for students who might otherwise lack exposure to organised football programmes. Each school has been selected based on criteria that prioritise reaching underserved communities where girls' participation in sport is particularly limited.

What the campaign will deliver

The day's activities will be led by qualified coaches and include structured football training sessions covering basic techniques, game understanding and tactical awareness. Beyond the pitch, organisers have planned interactive educational components focused on teamwork, confidence-building and healthy lifestyle promotion—recognising that grassroots football development extends beyond athletic skill alone.

Participants will experience hands-on coaching and competitive small-sided games designed to be enjoyable whilst maintaining educational value. The campaign represents a shift in approach: rather than simply introducing girls to football, FIFA's model emphasises creating pathways for sustained development, with the goal of identifying young players with potential for advancement through Ghana's competitive structures.

Why it matters for Ghana

This initiative arrives at a pivotal moment for Ghanaian women's football. The sector has gained momentum in recent years through increased investment in youth development programmes and the growth of formal competitions like the Malta Guinness Women's Premier League, which provides a professional pathway for players. However, a significant gap remains between elite-level competition and grassroots participation, particularly in regions outside Accra.

The Ghana Football Association, working alongside FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has identified school-based programmes as crucial for expanding the talent pipeline. By embedding football development directly into basic school environments, the campaign tackles a key barrier: many Ghanaian girls lack structured opportunities to learn the sport at a young age, limiting their chances to develop skills and pursue football seriously later.

The Volta Region, in particular, stands to benefit. While football is deeply embedded in Ghanaian culture, regional disparities in women's football infrastructure mean some areas have limited access to coaching, facilities or competition. This campaign directly addresses that gap by bringing certified coaches and equipment to twenty schools simultaneously, creating a multiplier effect across the region.

Success here could establish a template for expansion. If the July 14 event demonstrates strong interest and identifies promising young players, similar campaigns in other regions could follow, gradually building a broader foundation for sustainable women's football development across Ghana. This aligns with broader CAF objectives to strengthen African women's football ahead of continental and international competitions.

Organisers emphasise that beyond identifying future stars, the campaign aims to shift cultural perceptions around girls' participation in sport, building confidence both on and off the pitch and demonstrating that football is a viable pathway for young Ghanaian women.
